Ancillary Task 1 : Magazine front cover

This is our first ancillary task, we took an excisting magazine and created our own front cover featuring our new horror film trailer. After a number of a initial designs and playing around with colour, fonts and other features. We decided that the one above was the best and most professional looking front cover.

Empire Font
Second Ancillary Task
For our second ancillary task we have decided to complete a magazine cover. We are undecided if we will create an original magazine or if we will use a magazine already made for example 'Empire' Magazine which is widely recognized in the film community. Creating our own magazine from scratch would give us a lot more chance to use our creativity and design fonts etc. etc. But using a template from a Magazine already in production would give our product a more professional finish.

Back Drops for Poster
When creating our poster it is key that the backdrop is relevant to the genre of the film and relevant to what happens in the film, for example using a back drop of a football match for a film that dosen't involve football. Thats why it is important that we toy with a couple of ideas before we choose what we will use. We have shortlisted a few ideas. They follow below:

These are images taken from the internet and these will not be what we will use for our final piece. They are merely ideas and inspirations for when we start creating our final media piece.

Skeleton Poster
The picture above is a skeleton of how we want our poster to be layed out. At the top we want our reviews for our film from magazines and such, the picture has to be the main focus of the poster therefore we will put it in the middle, the picture will be placed just above the name of the film. At the bottom we will place the billing block, this is where the billing block is generally placed.

British Film Poster
The images Below are images of Posters that we all agree resemble what we would like our poster to look like. Each film has a simular genre to ours and we believe looking at different posters will give us new inspirations and ideas.

Dog Soldiers (2002)
Action/ Horror
Directed by Neil Marshall
In this poster we liked the fading characters.

28 Weeks Later (2007)
Horror/ Thriller
Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadilio.
In this photo we said that we liked the eroding font. We believed it showed a sense of decay.

28 Days Later (2002)
Horror/ Thriller
Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadilio
In This Poster our group said that we like the red bold colour for the background.

Poster Analysis

The annotated poster above highlights the key features we have to consider when we are creating our poster for this ancillary task. This is a good poster to look at because its a british horror thriller which matches our film genre. The hidden identity of the killer is something that we want on our poster, as we don't wish to give away to much of the story before our targated audience as even seen the production.

Film Posters
When we created our film production our main inspiration was Dead Man Shoes, so i believe it would be unfair to look at film poster created by them. from the picture below the main colour scheme is clearly red and black, these are two very bold colours that are associated with horror films. The font that is used is very simple yet effective this is because the colour of the font is contrasting to the colour of the background for example. When there is red font the background is black.

Ancillary Task
As the production we choose to do was a film production we had three options for our ancillary task. From these options we had to pick two. The given tasks are shown below.
-A web page advertising our film
-The front cover of a magazine advertising our film
-A Film poster advertising our film
The first thing we did before starting to make progress was to decided which two tasks we wish to complete. Each member of the group was very keen on creating a poster, this was because he felt this was an area in which we had more experience and more competent in. So now it was just to decide what our second ancillary task would be, we began to give reasons why each task would suit us, but in the end we agreed that we would create the front cover of a magazine as i was the only member in the group that had experience in web design and using Dreamweaver. below is the two tasks that we have choosen to take on.
